Kino began in Montreal in January 1999, at the instigation of some twenty young filmmakers who challenged themselves to each produce one short film per month until the year 2000 : the Kino movement was then born ! In 2001, Kino’00 (now Kino Montreal) developed a new concept within the Festival du Nouveau Cinéma (FNC): the Kino Kabaret, a creation la where artists are invited to make spontaneous films by collaborating with each other. This original concept was a resounding success, and is largely responsible for the multiplication of Kino chapters around the globe.
Kino is today a vast international network of independent filmmakers spread over a hundred chapters in the world, dedicated to making short films where generosity, mutual aid, hospitality and freedom are the key foundations of the collective spirit. You will find on this page the directory of Kino chapters around the world. This list must be constantly updated, because there are new chapters regularly founded and swelling the ranks of our great network.
